Back when computers were 1,000 times slower than today... back when volumetric rendering was just being invented... I tried my hand at making an atomic bomb blast. The challenge back in the mid 1990's was creating a realistic, 3D, roiling mushroom cloud, one that rolled in upon itself. And so I set off to find an "easy" way to do so. The solution? Animated textures to displace and color a highly subdivided sphere. The result still stands the test of time, even without today's advances in computational fluid dynamics and simular volumetric cloud simulations.
